Sal is the most developed of all the Cape Verde Islands in terms of tourism yet still has a very barren landscape. Sal is an ideal place to start your sailing vacation in the Cape Verde Archipelago and also a perfect place for relaxing in the sun and enjoying sailing and fishing along the coastline. Access to the airport, the ease of internal circulation, and the extension and beauty of its beaches are favourable factors that have contributed greatly to the dynamism of the tourism on this island. Live music plays a huge part in Cape Verde culture and is often performed live in various bars in Santa Maria during the evening. This is a unique experience and one not to be missed. A large percentage of visitors come to Sal for the water sports and it's hardly surprising. Sal's long sandy beaches and turquoise water make a wonderful playground
for water sports enthusiasts. Sal receives more than half of the volume of tourists in Cape Verde. The Town of Santa Maria, formerly the capital, is the principal tourist center on the island, and today it is an important urban center in the archipelago in restaurant and nightlife activity. The island is well equipped in land transportation, with the best roads in the archipelago, good buses, and an excellent fleet of rental cars.
Sport fishing, windsurfing, and other water sports are practiced in or from Santa Maria. To protect the fragile ecologic balance of the natural spaces in the face of the great demand from tourism, a total of eleven protected spaces were created on the Island of Sal, including various modalities. Worthy of note are the Salinas at Pedra de Lume which is the only salina in the world located inside a volcanic caldera. The value of the landscape of the relief forms as well as the type of phenomena that is in its genesis and the historic importance of this salina, have made it a candidate as a Natural Patrimony of Humanity. Principally a beach resort with long stretches of white sand and an abundance of water sports Sal is really an island for beach lovers and perfect destination for a romantic sailing escape and Cape Verde islands hopping as most of the island's sights and attractions can be seen in half a day. By night, Santa Maria, the main tourist area in Sal boasts a lively atmosphere with a good choice of bars and restaurants. Marine life around the coast of Sal and the rest of the archipelago is high with countless species including flamboyant tropical fish, dolphins and turtles. Best for Medium to Advanced divers due to currents and dive depths, the diving in Sal is excellent. Dives range from 25-42m with caves, drop offs and shark sites. You’ll see a mix of tropical and Atlantic fish – rays, turtles, morays, lobsters, groupers, Tiger
sharks and huge shoals of tuna. Sea temperature is 22-27 degrees all year. Please note there is no decompression chamber on the island. With clear turquoise waters, white sand beaches and perfect conditions, this is surfing heaven.
